The Thermodynamic Waste of Choice

We are culturally conditioned to view maximum choice as ultimate freedom. But mechanically, forcing a system to evaluate infinite, low-stakes variables doesn't liberate it; it exhausts it.

Unregulated choice creates friction, not freedom.

This is exactly why global franchises like McDonald's succeed on a massive scale. Every time you evaluate a new variable (a new brand, an unfamiliar restaurant), you expend systemic energy. If the reward doesn't offset that cognitive cost, you experience a net energy loss. Franchises don't win by being the highest quality; they win by acting as a zero-friction energy conduit. When you choose the standardized option, you reduce prediction error to zero.

You aren't giving up your free will—you are tactically refusing to waste your thermodynamic output on a low-yield environment. By outsourcing the cognitive load, you preserve your energy for the choices that actually matter.
